InDesign PDF export settings guide (Newsprint)

  • newspapersAll files should be in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) version 1.3, preferred PDF files from QuarkXPress or InDesign using Pass4Press PDF settings.
  • All transparency and layers flattened.
  • Newsprint settings differ from the Magazine settings in just four areas . . . Transparency Flattener is 1200 and 300; Images, 200 dpi for contones and a minimum 600 dpi (max. 1200) for lineart; Total Ink Limit in images is 240%.
  • Fonts should be embedded/subset and should be PostScript Type1, TrueType or OpenType
  • CMYK Colour only (No spot / Pantone  colour or RGB colour)
  • Magazine image resolution 300dpi
  • Newspaper TAC 240%, the use of ISOnewspaper 26v4.icc is recommended.
  • Neither custom transfer functions nor custom halftones should be used
  • Crop, Bleed and Trim marks should not be used, unless it is for a full page advert or double page spread.

How to install ICC profiles on your Windows computer
Right click on the ICC Profile once downloaded and select “Install Profile”.
Any applications (such as Adobe InDesign / Adobe Photoshop etc) that will use the profiles must be restarted to see the new profiles.

Photoshop – Warning
Photoshop is an excellent tool for image editing and colour correction, but is not recommended for creating PDFs for print as all text and logos will be rasterised.
